Haier is a Chinese-owned company based in Qingdao, Shandong. It was founded in 1984 by Zhang Ruimin, who is still the company’s CEO more than two decades after the company went public in 2000.

In 2016, GE spun off its appliance business to Haier Group for $5.6 billion, giving the Chinese multinational a massive footprint and indelible brand in the North American market. The company bought the right to use the GE brand on its appliances for forty years, and GE Appliances' domestic operations were allowed to remain in its long-time home of Louisville, Kentucky.
Interestingly, Haier only picked up GE because regulators blocked GE from selling the business to Electrolux.
