Founded in 1992 by Tokuji Hayakawa, Sharp began as a metalworking shop. Its earliest innovations didn’t come in the kitchen; the company was named after Hayakawa’s first invention, the mechanical pencil, which he created in 1915. That success was toppled by the catastrophic 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, though they eventually rebuilt.
The company eventually began designing and manufacturing electronics by mid-century, including its first television in 1953. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, it added microwaves, calculators, and other products to its electronics line-up.

Sharp’s ever-expanding catalog led to serious financial issues by the late 1990s. Its pioneering LCD displays drove rapid production expansion to support its LCD-based products, but that investment failed to deliver the necessary returns as competitors quickly caught up, lowering prices and margins across the industry.
That forced Sharp to accept an acquisition. After struggling with debt for years, Sharp finally agreed to a 66% controlling-stake acquisition by manufacturing giant Foxconn in 2016. The deal stabilized Sharp’s operations and allowed the company to invest in product development, with a particular focus on its home and kitchen appliances.
