Whether it’s burnt on food stains or marks from water boiled over on spaghetti night, your electric stove top bears the brunt of hurried, harried cooking. Fortunately, cleaning a glass stove top is almost as easy as getting it dirty, as long as you know how. We put together a few tips to make removing stains simple!
The best way to remove stains from a flat top stove is to reach for baking soda and water. Baking soda is a safe way to remove burnt-on food from stove tops, not to mention your oven, dishware, and many other surfaces throughout your home.
A simple baking soda paste is the best way to clean a flat top stove; here’s how to do it:

Steel wool and other abrasive cleaning pads can scratch your stove top, so avoid using them at all costs. If you’re having trouble with a particular stain, try the baking soda paste method a few times. If it still doesn’t work, use a plastic scraper (an old driver’s license or credit card will work) to pick up food debris; be careful not to scratch the stove top. Avoid using metal tools to clean your stove, as they can be very abrasive and cause lasting damage.
While it isn’t always convenient, we recommend cleaning your electric cooktop after every use. Once the surface has cooled, wipe it with a clean cloth and warm water, then add a touch of dish soap. This will reduce the number of burnt-on food stains you’ll have to deal with on your “deep clean” days, and keep your stove looking brilliant for years to come!
Cooking carefully (use lids!) and wiping down your stovetop after every use reduces the need for specialty stove-top cleaners. If you absolutely need to use a specialized cooktop cleaner, follow the instructions closely and rinse the surface with water before using the stovetop again to remove any lingering residue.
Avoid using most other cleaning chemicals, as they may react poorly to heat and damage the glass surface.
