What to Look for in a Dishwasher

There is a surprising array of dishwashers available on the market, each with its pros and cons. Different types of dishwashers boast different features, control panels, and flexible ways of organizing the internal rack system to suit your cleaning needs. Of course, you’ll also need to balance the right features with the right size dishwasher for your kitchen as well.

When it’s time to compare dishwashers, call Max’s Service; here’s a primer to help you get started!

Explore our dishwasher brands.

The Most Common Types of Dishwashers

While there’s some overlap between styles, comparing dishwashers largely comes down to these characteristics.

Built-in or Portable Dishwashers

The first two types are elemental, though it’s important to note that many features we’ll cover are available in built-in and portable dishwashers.

Built-in dishwashers occupy a dedicated space in the kitchen next to cupboards. They share a uniform countertop with the rest of the kitchen. About 50% of all residential dishwashers are built-in, while about 75% of all US homes own a dishwasher.

As the name suggests, portable dishwashers can be moved around the kitchen. They are ideal for small kitchens or adding a dishwasher without doing a complete remodel.

Top and Front Control Dishwashers

It may seem subtle, but many customers prefer how they control their dishwashers.

Front control dishwashers have control panels on the unit’s door. They are the most common option because they have a lower frontal profile, are easy to read, and provide all the necessary information.

Top control dishwashers’ control panels are on the top of the unit. Some think this makes them easier to read (no bending over) and easier to clean the panel. That top-mounted panel is a little easier to bump accidentally, however.

Third-rack Dishwashers

Third-rack dishwashers are relatively new and offer a shallow third rack near the top of the unit. That additional space is ideal for utensils and mugs, which are used frequently in busy households.

Are Dishwashers a Standard Size?

No, and sizing is one of the most overlooked aspects of many dishwasher comparisons. Some features just aren’t as practical in smaller units; we can help you determine the right size and model for your home.

While some manufacturers may offer a wider variety, the most common dishwasher sizes are divided into four categories.

  • Compact dishwasher:  18 inches wide, 34 to 36 inches tall and 24 inches deep
  • Standard dishwasher: 24 inches wide, 34 to 36 inches tall and 24 inches deep
  • Oversized dishwasher: 30 to 42 inches wide, 34 to 36 inches tall and 24 inches deep

How to Choose a Dishwasher’s Features

Comparing dishwashers across manufacturers can be difficult due to terminology. Different dishwasher brands call similar features different things, making model–to–model comparisons challenging for consumers.

Choosing the right dishwasher comes down to three things:

  1. Find the right size. Whether it’s built-in or portable, dishwashers do have a large footprint. Max’s can help you determine the right size and placement.
  2. Make sure it fits what you need. Think about your day-to-day dishwashing habits. Smaller families can often get by with a smaller dishwasher or go days without running it as the dishes slowly fill it up.
  3. Think about energy. Dishwashers can increase your energy bill from frequent use, mostly from using hot water. Look for Energy Star-rated appliances to improve energy efficiency and save money on every load.
