Stackable Washer and Dryers: Pros and Cons

A stackable washer and dryer is a smart upgrade if your laundry room is tight on space. Designed to keep a small footprint and squeeze into corners or next to other utilities, stackable appliances deliver the same performance as full-size equipment and may offer energy savings as well.

Learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of stacking washer and dryer units to see if they’re a good fit for you.

What Is a Stacked Washer & Dryer?

A stacked washer and dryer, or a “laundry center,” as some call it, places the dryer above the washer to form a tower instead of putting the units side-by-side. All stackable washer and dryer sets are front-loading, which offers advantages all its own. Front-loading washers have a larger drum capacity, better water extraction, and tend to use less energy than top-loading washers.

The Dimensions of a Stackable Washer and Dryer

Stacked washer and dryer sizes vary, but most are between 23 and 29 inches wide and 73 to 83 inches tall. Some manufacturers classify laundry centers as standard, large capacity, and compact; here’s how those classes stack up:

  • Standard: 27 in wide, 75 in tall, and 30–34 in deep
  • Large capacity: 24–29 in wide, 74–83 in tall, and 8–33 in deep
  • Compact: 23–27 in wide, 74 in tall, and 22–24 in deep

The Advantages of a Stackable Washer and Dryer

The obvious benefit of a laundry center is space savings. Stacked washers and dryers are ideal for apartments, smaller homes, or homes without a dedicated laundry area. The space-saving design makes installation much more flexible, allowing for a variety of living conditions without sacrificing performance.

The Disadvantages of Stacked Washers and Dryers

There are some drawbacks to these set-ups, however. In some cases, the dryer drum is smaller than traditional units, which may mean more loads, which could impact efficiency in the long run.

Stacked washers and dryers are sometimes more difficult to maintain or repair. The design makes certain components harder to access, although more modern options have addressed this issue by putting high-wear components near the front of the unit.

Finally, those with limited mobility or strength may find loading and unloading laundry from the stacked dryer unit difficult. Laundry centers may not be ideal for seniors or those designing their homes to age in place
