How to Clean a Dishwasher (and Why You Should)

Your dishwasher does a lot of dirty work. Cleaning it and its filter is a quick and easy way to keep your machine functioning efficiently. If you’ve noticed less-than-sparkling dishes or other signs of trouble, it might be time to give your dishwasher a good cleaning.

Grab your rubber gloves; it’s time to give your dishwasher a good scrub!

How to Clean Your Dishwasher

First, remove racks or baskets from your dishwasher, including the utensil basket and ranks. Removing these parts will make cleaning your dishwasher by hand easier and let you clean away any stuck-on food debris from the removable parts.

To clean your dishwasher’s removable components:

  1. Fill your sink with 1.5 to 3 cups of warm water. Soak the parts for about 20 minutes before wiping them clean with a sponge or rag.
  2. Rinse and set aside to air dry.
  3. Next, clean the inside of the dishwasher using vinegar.
  4. First, empty the dishwasher and place one cup of vinegar on the top rack.
  5. Then, run the dishwasher on its hottest setting. The heat and vinegar combined will remove stuck-on food and tackle any lingering odors!

One important note: if you clean your dishwasher with vinegar, skip the drying cycle. Instead, open the door and let it air dry.

How to Clean the Dishwasher Door

Start by scrubbing around the rubber gasket with an old toothbrush or soft rag. If stubborn, stuck-on grease is present, consider using a solution of three cups hot water and ½ cup vinegar. Some gaskets are more susceptible to clogging than others, so you may need to wipe them down or clear them more often if you have clogs or built-up debris.

How to Clean the Dishwasher Filter

Finally, don’t forget to clean your dishwasher filter. More modern units have a self-cleaning filter, so you won’t have to lift a finger. However, older dishwashers may need cleaning every few months. Here’s how to get it done:

  1. Unlock the dishwasher filter and pull it out; if you’re not sure how, check your owner’s manual.
  2. Inspect the filter base for debris. If it’s clear, wipe the area clean with a soft rag.
  3. Wash the filter by hand in the sink. A soft-bristle brush or soft rag usually works best.

How Often Should I Clean My Dishwasher?

Most manufacturers recommend cleaning your dishwasher once a month to prevent food buildup, detergent residue, and other issues. However, if you use your dishwasher more frequently, have hard water, or notice an odor, you may need to clean it more often.

A Few Words on Dishwasher Maintenance

Cleaning is the best way to maintain your dishwasher, but there are other ways to keep it functioning properly.

  • Run cycles regularly - Even if you don’t use your dishwasher every day, it’s important to run it to prevent parts from seizing up and seals from drying out. Most manufacturers recommend running your dishwasher at least once a week to avoid these issues. Try to use your dishwasher after the biggest meal of the week to clean pots, pans, bowls, and plates all at once.
  • Replace parts—If your dishwasher isn't cleaning properly, making odd sounds, or leaking, it’s time for a service call. Your Max’s technician will identify the problem, explain the repair, and get your approval before starting work. You’ll know exactly what you’re getting and how much it will cost—no surprises, no gimmicks.
