Grill Cleaning Tips and Tricks

A clean grill is a safe grill, and it will also serve up better-tasting food. Cleaning a grill the right way isn’t as big of a chore as you might think. We’ve put together some of our tried-and-true grill cleaning tips to make your next cook-out less work and more fun.

How to Clean A BBQ Grill - Gas and Charcoal

The two most popular fuel types require slightly different cleaning techniques, and charcoal grills require a bit more work. Keep that in mind when you’re choosing a grill, too!

How to Clean a Gas Grill

Gas grills require much less cleaning, but you should perform a deep clean at the beginning and end of each grilling season. During regular use, run through a quick clean by following these steps:

  • Clear the grates with a stiff wire brush.
  • Use a rag or paper towels to apply vegetable oil to the grates to prevent rust.
  • Clean the inside of the grill lid with mild soap - dish soap is best.
  • Leave the lid open to dry out completely.

How to Clean a Charcoal Grill

Charcoal grills are certainly the most work to maintain. The key, of course, is to clean your grill consistently to prevent ash build-up that negatively impacts performance and increases the risk of fire. Once the charcoal bricks have cooled, here’s how to clean your charcoal grill.

  • Remove the bricks and brush out the ash.
  • Clean the grates with a stiff wire brush; in a pinch, you can use balled-up aluminum foil to remove burned-on food.
  • Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil with a rag or piece of cloth to prevent rust.

Do You Really Need to Clean a BBQ After Every Use?

We recommend it. Not only does it reduce potential food contamination from stuck-on food debris, it substantially lowers your risk of fire. Dirty grills are responsible for 20% of all grill-related fires.

Your Bi-Annual Grill Deep Clean

Find time for a thorough deep clean at the start and end of the grilling season. Some year-round gas grillers perform a deep clean whenever they refill their tank. The more you grill, the more often you’ll need to get your hands dirty!

Give yourself an hour or so to finish the job - let’s get going!

  • Preheat the grill for 15 minutes on high heat, then turn off the grill and disconnect the gas.
  • Clean the grates with a stiff wire brush and water; be careful, there will be some steam!
  • Once the grill is cool, wipe the grate with a damp cloth.
  • Remove the burners from the gas lines and clean the gas ports.
  • Clean the gas valves and the grill's inside and outside surfaces with a brush and warm soapy water.
  • Keep the lid open to let the grill dry completely, then replace the burners and grates.
