Electrolux has a long and storied history, jumping from a Swedish powerhouse to an international appliance behemoth through strategic acquisition and quality craft.
The company’s name hints at its founding in 1919. That’s when Swedish companies Lux AB (a maker of kerosene lamps) and Elektromekansia AB (a vacuum cleaner company) merged under the direction of entrepreneur Axel Wenner-Gren. Combining two Swedish powerhouse manufacturers drove immediate results. The company unveiled an elegant Model V vacuum cleaner in 1921, then moved into refrigerators two years later.
Electrolux’s primary growth model was through acquisition, entering new fields by purchasing companies with a firm toehold in those industries. It acquired Bohus Mekaniska Verkstad in the 1940s to enter the laundry market, and entered the dishwasher market and commercial food service in the 1950s and 60s.
Electrolux Group owns and operates the Electrolux brand, along with a slew of other high-profile home appliance companies. It also owns Frigidaire, AEG, Kelvinator, Zanussi, Eureka, Tappan, and the North American brand rights for Westinghouse. Electrolux Professional, which makes food service equipment, is a separate company after its 2020 spin-off.
