How to Clean an Oven Without Chemicals

Cleaning your oven is the least glamorous part of kitchen clean-up, but we all have to do it. A clean oven reduces fire risk and foul odors, improves the flavor of your dishes, and extends the lifespan of your oven. We have a few tips for cleaning your oven to make the job a little easier and a little safer.

How to Clean an Oven Without Oven Cleaner

There are dozens of oven-cleaning products available, but they may emit toxic fumes or cause skin irritation. They may also damage the oven’s finish or corrode parts. Most manufacturers advise against using oven cleaners, but don’t worry; there are a few natural alternatives. Instead, try using baking soda or a vinegar solution. We have the best results using baking soda to clean ovens with baked-on food debris; here’s how to do it.

How to Clean an Oven with Baking Soda

First, you’ll need to gather some supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • A spray bottle
  • A sponge or cloth

Here’s how to clean an oven without harsh chemicals!

  1. Turn off your oven. Your oven should be completely cool; never try to clean an oven if it’s still warm.
  2. Remove the racks and place them in a tub of hot water. Add a half cup of baking soda and let it sit for several hours.
  3. Make a paste by mixing half a cup of baking soda with just enough water to make a thick but spreadable paste.
  4. Apply the paste to the inside of the oven wherever you see baked on food and crust.
  5. Let the paste sit for several hours. Overnight is usually best.
  6. Wipe it down with a damp cloth. Repeat the process with your soaking oven racks.
  7. Rinse the racks and the oven, then dry with a clean towel.

The more often you clean your oven, the easier it will be to remove debris and stains. Depending on how often you use your oven and what foods you make, plan on cleaning your oven every three to six months.

Should I Use the Self-Clean On My Oven?

While using your oven's self-cleaning feature is convenient and effective, it can be very damaging to its interior. Here are some pros and cons of using the self-clean function.

Pros of Using the Self-Clean Feature

  • It works. Most self-cleaning ovens effectively remove debris by burning off food residue.
  • It’s convenient. It’s a hands-off way to clean your oven.

Cons of Self-Cleaning

  • It’s hot. Self-cleaning relies on extreme heat to burn off debris. These high temperatures may shorten the lifespan of your oven if used frequently.
  • It’s a fire risk. While fires are rare, using the self-clean feature may increase fire risk.
  • It (might) stink. The high temperatures often cause foul odors from burning food and heating the metal coatings and components in your oven. These bad smells can linger for hours and even days.

Is the Self-Clean Oven Feature Safe?

It’s best to use this feature with caution. Consider pre-cleaning your oven to remove the worst of the debris, avoid touching the oven during the cycle, and open windows to circulate air to remove the bad smells. Monitor the oven throughout the process; don’t leave the house or sleep while using the self-cleaning function.

Three Oven Cleaning Hacks

Stay ahead of baked-on food with these oven-cleaning tips from the pros.

  1. The best way to clean your oven is to tackle spills right away. As soon as the oven has cooled, check your oven for food spills and use a damp cloth to wipe down the interior.
  2. Making something messy? Use baking sheets on the rack below the food to catch drips and spills. This is a must for baking messy, bubbling pies and casseroles.
  3. When all else fails, use oven liners to protect the bottom of your oven. Just make sure this is safe by checking your owner’s manual.
