President’s Day, which is also George Washington’s birthday, is coming up quickly on Monday, February 21. While few folks decide to celebrate the occasion, )aside from mattress stores, it seems) perhaps cooking enthusiasts have a delicious reason to take the holiday a bit more seriously.
We propose that you and your young ones head to the kitchen to bake our nation’s first President’s favorite food - the hoecake!
Hoecakes are likely very rare in today’s society, and it’s understandable why that’s the case. These pancake-like, unleavened cakes are super simple, made of just cornmeal, water, and a pinch of salt.
While these don’t sound particularly tasty on their own, Washington and his contemporaries ate these cakes after drenching them in honey and washed them down with hot tea.
While you can take a bare-bones approach to these cakes, we suggest trying out this Southern Hoecakes recipe from Spicy Southern Kitchen. Let’s just say the additional ingredients will add a lot more to the pallet than the way our forefathers prepared these.
While most prefer to eat this recipe for breakfast, covered in butter similar to pancakes, these can be a dinner dish as well. Many in the South serve hoecakes along with turnip or collard greens to soak up the paste the greens are cooked in. Talk about soul food - this sounds simply delicious!
Here’s to a history lesson and some recipe ideas to celebrate President’s Day and George Washington’s birthday! We hope you’ll get the young ones involved and in the kitchen to celebrate. Thanks so much for reading and happy cooking.
